Internet Activists Detained in Alexandria, No Explanation Given for Arrests

According to ANHRI's information, on 23 July 2008, security officers arrested a number of young Internet activists, who form part of the "6th of April Youth" group. The youths were arrested during a trip to Alexandria and are being held in a State Security detention centre, known as the "Pharaohs' Quarters". On 24 July, Ahmed Maher, a member of the group, was detained by police officers while walking in the Alrramal station of Alexandria. Both incidents indicate that security agencies are targeting the young men and women who form the "6th of April Youth" group.

Journalist Harassed, Detained, His Photographs Erased, While Investigating Construction Company Activities

The Arab Network for Human Rights Information, ANHRI.net, has presented a complaint to the Prosecutor General demanding an explanation for not conducting any investigation of an assault on Almohamed Altaher, a journalist at "Al-Tareeq" newspaper. Altaher was illegally detained by some of the staff members of Madinaty Project, which is run by Alexandria Constructions Company.

Release Dozens of Protestors Held Without Charge

Egypt should immediately release six men who have been detained for more than 90 days without charge since their arrests following a workers strike and street protests in Mahalla al-Kobra in April, Human Rights Watch said today. Human Rights Watch also called on authorities to suspend the prosecution of 49 others by a security court where procedures violate fair trial rights and to investigate allegations that some of the men were tortured.
